If you were a New York State resident in 2023, you’ve likely heard about the inflation refund checks announced earlier this year. And by now—late October—you may have already received yours in the mail.
To recap, more than 8 million New Yorkers are receiving inflation refund checks ranging from $150 to $400. These payments are part of the 2025–2026 state budget and are funded by the state’s sales tax revenue. The goal of these payments is to help offset the impact of inflation on everyday purchases by returning a portion of the sales tax paid by residents.
These are the first inflation refund checks ever issued by New York State, and if you qualify, there’s no action required on your part. The state is sending them automatically if you are eligible based on their criteria. Let’s break down the key details:
Am I Eligible?
You’re eligible for a refund check if:
- You filed Form IT-201 (New York State Resident Income Tax Return) for the 2023 tax year
- You were a full-time resident of New York State in 2023
- You were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return
- Your reported income fell within the qualifying thresholds based on your 2023 filing status (see below)

When Will My Check Arrive?
New York began mailing checks in late September of 2025. If yours hasn’t arrived yet, don’t worry as it is likely on the way. With over 8 million checks being distributed, the mailing process is staggered over several weeks and it is not being done specifically by zip code or region. Also, the state’s contact center cannot provide updates on individual check statuses. Patience is key.
Where Is My Check Being Sent?
Your check is being mailed to the address listed on your most recently filed tax return. If you have moved since you filed your 2024 return, you can update your address with the Department using your Individual Online Services Account found through this link: NY.gov ID Login V4.
Beware of Scams
The Tax Department is not contacting taxpayers about this inflation refund check. If you receive any calls, mailings, or texts, these are scams. These communications generally request your personal information using the basis that they are helping to deposit money into your bank account. If you are contacted regarding this check, report it by calling 518-457-0578 or by email at dtfoia@tax.ny.gov.
As October is almost over, many New Yorkers are already seeing their refund checks arrive. If you’re still waiting, keep an eye on your mailbox and remember, no further action is needed to claim your payment. If you do hear about it, odds are it is a scam so please be aware.
